Even though Jillian & Matt first found me last August, we only had a chance to meet in person when I shot their engagement session three weeks ago in Boston, where they live. Prior to heading to Boston, I sent them a questionnaire to get to know them a bit better and their responses really resonated with me and my reasons for getting into wedding photography in the first place. Here’s what Jillian said when I asked her what was most important to her about the wedding, as well as what was most important to them about their wedding photography:
We cannot hope for perfection, that simply would not be who we are or what we seek, but a good day for everyone to be together to celebrate. Matt and I love each other, and can not imagine not experiencing the highest of highs and lowest of lows together. A wedding doesn’t amplify those feelings, but it certainly gives hope in humanity and family to be brought together by love!
I don’t need 50 pictures of my good side, that would be my right by the way, but just a hand-full of images to show the love and admiration we share for each other. Images are very meaningful to us as it is the only remaining link we have to the past, and I want them to be a memento of a piece of history that brought our future family into being.
I can’t even describe how much I agree with that sentiment. A wedding day is much more than the perfect pose or beautiful lighting, although they are quite important as well. It’s the coming together of friends and two families for the first time – a million fleeting moments that make up a story that will be told and re-told for years to come. Having the chance to be a part of that is a wonderful feeling, and one I’m thankful to Jillian & Matt for giving me. Once I got home from the wedding and had time to process everything, I realized that they couldn’t have been more right about the joy that I could see in all of their friends and family, some of whom traveled from all over the US and as far away as England and New Zealand to be with them. Everything on the day of the wedding – from Jillian’s beautiful custom-made dress to the colorful flowers and decorations by Jen Pineau of Sugar Magnolias to the fantastic tunes by Amanda Pearl of Fat Cat DJ & Karaoke to beautiful live music courtesy of Matt’s talented uncles – was simply amazing.
